Omegia™ Sea Buckthorn Oil for Dry Eye
A recent clinical study has demonstrated the potential of Sea Buckthorn Oil, a supplement rich in Omega fatty acids and antioxidants, to alleviate Dry eye symptoms by reducing tear film osmolarity and improving overall comfort. Published in The Journal of Nutrition, the findings highlight the benefits of this natural oil for supporting eye health, particularly during cold or dry seasons when symptoms are often exacerbated.
Dry eye is a widespread condition that can significantly impact quality of life. It is often linked to tear film instability and increased osmolarity, which can trigger inflammation and ocular surface damage. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 100 participants aged 20–75, researchers evaluated the effects of sea buckthorn oil on dry eye symptoms. Over three months, participants consumed either 2 grams of sea buckthorn oil or a placebo daily, with regular assessments of tear film osmolarity, tear break-up time (TBUT), and symptoms such as redness and burning.
Key Findings
1. Tear Film Osmolarity Reduction
One of the key markers of dry eye is tear film hyperosmolarity. During the study, tear film osmolarity increased in both the sea buckthorn (SB) oil and placebo groups, a typical seasonal effect caused by colder temperatures and lower humidity.
However, participants in the SB group experienced a significantly smaller increase:
Intention-to-treat (ITT) analysis:
The SB group showed a significantly smaller increase in osmolarity compared to the placebo group (P = 0.04).
Per-protocol (PP) analysis:
The trend remained consistent, with the SB group exhibiting less osmolarity increase (P = 0.02).
These results suggest that SB oil helps mitigate tear film hyperosmolarity, a key contributor to dry eye, particularly in harsh environmental conditions.
2. Relief from Common Symptoms
Participants in the SB oil group reported notable improvements in common dry eye symptoms, such as redness and burning:
Redness:
In the ITT group, maximum redness scores were significantly lower in the SB group (P = 0.04).Only 6% of SB group participants experienced the highest redness severity (score of 3) compared to 36% in the placebo group.
Burning:
Among the PP participants, maximum burning scores were significantly lower in the SB group (P = 0.04).Only 12% of SB participants reported the highest burning severity (score of 3) compared to 32% in the placebo group.
These findings indicate that SB oil can meaningfully reduce the intensity of redness and burning, two of the most uncomfortable symptoms of dry eye.

3. Results from Omegia™ Sea Buckthorn Oil
Further evidence came from a 12-week clinical trial conducted at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital and Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science. This study tested the effects of 500 mg daily of Omegia™ Sea Buckthorn Oil in women over 45.
Key results included:
Increased Eye Moisture: 90% of participants reported being satisfied or very satisfied with improvements in eye hydration.
Reduced Redness and Irritation: 65% of participants noted reduced redness and irritation.
Improved Comfort: Participants experienced a decrease in foreign body sensation and greater overall comfort.
4. Improved Quality of Life
Contact lens wearers in the SB group reported fewer days of overall eye discomfort compared to those in the placebo group (65% of days with symptoms vs. 81% in the placebo group, P = 0.049).
Conclusion
"This study demonstrates that Sea Buckthorn Oil can provide meaningful relief for individuals dealing with dry eye symptoms, especially during colder months," stated Dr. Petra S. Larmo, lead researcher at the University of Turku. "Its rich composition of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as antioxidants, offers a natural, nutritional approach to eye health."
The findings underscore Omegia™ Sea Buckthorn Oil’s potential as a safe, long-term solution for managing dry eye symptoms. Derived from the berries of Hippophae rhamnoides, the oil has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and continues to gain recognition for its therapeutic properties.
As digital screen time and environmental stressors increasingly challenge eye health, targeted nutrition like Omegia™ Sea Buckthorn Oil offers a natural and effective way to combat dry eye symptoms.
