New Omega for Heart: Omega 7

February is the heart awareness month. We want to raise awareness of Omega 7 and its benefits to cardiovascular health. Unlike DHA, Omega 7 functions as a lipid hormone, a Lipokine, which helps to inhibit lipogenesis and improve lipid metabolism. Moreover, it also helps to stimulate insulin action and promote glucose metabolism. As a whole, Omega 7 may help to enhance our bodies' metabolism and thus cardiovascular health.

Omega 7 consumption was shown to reduce serum triglyceride by 15%, the unhealthy LDL by 8% while increasing the beneficial HDL by 5% in 60 healthy participants in 1 month. There was also a 44% decrease in C-reactive protein, which indicated an improvement in the inflammatory status of the participants. (Bernstein et al., 2014)

 

Apart from that, another study showed that regular intake of Omega 7 led to a 45% decrease in atherosclerotic lesions and a 30% reduction in circulating triglycerides. These might help to prevent blood vessel plaque buildup, as well as the hardening and thickening of arteries. (Yang et.al, 2019).
